Charon is the ferryman of Hades, his role to carry souls of the newly deceased across the river Styx and the river Acheron, that divid the world of the living and the world of the dead.
Origins
Charon is the son of Erebus and Nyx. It is the duty of this fiery eyed ferryman to escort souls across the river and into the underworld. It is customary to pay Charon for safe passage with an obol or danakē. The living would place the obol in the mouth of the recently deceased to cover the fare. It is said that failure to pay would result in the soul wandering the shores for one hundred years.
